The Importance of Self-Care and How to Better Look After Yourself

Self-care shouldn’t be seen as a “nice to have” or an indulgence. It is a priority.

With one thing after the other taking over the top spot on our to-do list, it is easy to brush aside making time for ourselves.

With bills to pay, children to look after, and a million and one other things, you may laugh at the thought of scheduling in yet another “to-do”.

Though taking time for yourself shouldn’t be put on the back burner. In fact, it should be made a priority each and every day.

Why Is Self-Care So Important?

When we devote time to self-care, we are devoting time to our physical, mental, and emotional health. We would say those are all very important things!

Self-care is one of the many aspects of maintaining a healthy relationship with yourself. Think of self-care as nourishment. Every superwoman needs fuel to help fight day to day battles.

Practicing self-care can prevent burnout, reduce the negative effects of stress, help you focus, and restore balance.

When you feel stronger and balanced, you can be a better wife, mother, colleague, sister, daughter, etc.

So How Can You Better Look After Yourself?

There isn’t a one size fits all approach to self-care. The beauty of self-care is that it is completely based on what makes you feel good. Whether that’s going for a walk in the park or spending a few minutes meditating.

If you need some inspiration, here are a few of our favorite ways to practice self-care: 

Exercise –

Studies have shown that even 10 minutes of moderate exercise can make a difference in your mental and physical health [1].

Have a nice long bath

A bath is a perfect way to shut out the world, soothe sore muscles, and take a moment to breathe. For a relaxation boost, add essential oils such as lemon balm or chamomile.

Meditate –

Meditating can reduce stress and anxiety and help you clear your mind.

Call a friend –

It can be therapeutic to talk to someone about a problem you may have or even just to talk about your day.

Spend some time outside –

Fresh air, sunlight, and being in nature have all proven to drastically help your mental and physical health.

Stretch –

Taking just five minutes to do a few simple stretches can help calm your mind and release built-up tension.

Cook a delicious and nutritious meal –

This is all about taking care of yourselves from the inside out. Cooking itself can be relaxing and if you are making a delicious and nutritious meal, it’s a win-win.

Have a mini spa break –

Whether it’s taking 15 minutes to put on a face mask to restore your skin or adding shine to your hair with a deep conditioning treatment, a mini spa break is the perfect self-care moment.

Laugh –

They say laughter is the best medicine. Watch a funny show or have a nice chat with a friend.

Go for a walk –

This simple activity can help you clear your mind and improve your mood.
